House Painting Questions

How do I select an interior paint color?  It depends on what you want to do with the room. If you have a room that has poor lighting, then you want to go for a light color. Light colors also make a room look bigger and more open.  But what about darker colors?
Dark colors are great for intimacy, and for stark contrasts and are great for really large rooms as they give the illusion of making too large of a space seem smaller and more homey.  Brighter colors are good for adding cheer to a room. Warm colors such as reds, yellows, and oranges bring the walls closer making a room seem smaller, while on the other hand, cooler colors such as violets, blues, and greens create the illusion of a larger room.  Earth tones are great bridging colors and give a room an air of relaxation and class.  However, sometimes, there are other tricks that you can use to paint a room in your home.

Interior House Painting Tricks

If you have a square room, paint the first wall that someone sees when they walk into a room a different color than the other walls.  This will give the room a nice look while helping to make it look less like a box.  If a room is long and narrow, painting shorter walls a darker color makes the room seem more homey as well.
Some people even opt for a room of many colors.  One of our clients, for example, painted each interior wall a different color than the others.  It made for a festive and beautiful living space.  So remember, painting isn't just about picking the shade and the sheen, it is about using your imagination.  With literally millions of colors and finishes to choose from, you can redecorate your home the easiest way possible: by painting your home.

How are painting job estimates calculated? First off, you need to call a painter.  Once you've got them on the phone, they often do an on site estimate which should include your parts and labor.  The key to getting the correct amount on your estimate is to prepare beforehand by making of list of what needs to be painted.  Whether you need external house painting or you want to paint a room or rooms on the inside.  You want to have picked your colors and finishes as well as what budget you have to work with.   You also want to decide if you want to split up the job and do it all at once.
What will a painter use to paint my home?  It depends on the job.  Walls, ceilings, and trims are usually painted with a combination of brushes and rolls.  Exterior paint is a combination of rollers and sprayers.

How to Prepare for Interior Painting

How do I prepare for internal painting?  Move anything fragile or breakable, or anything such as electronic equipment.  Make sure that all areas that need to be painted are accessible by the contractor.  Do you need to put down plastic tarps?  It depends on the job, and as a rule, we do that.  You want to make sure that you are present for the painter for any questions, and to make sure that the areas are unlocked and easy to get to.
How fast does paint dry?  It depends on the paint.  Some paints dry in mere minutes, while others take a few hours.  You want to make sure that you don't touch the paint for a day to be sure, however.  Particularly if you are using a low gloss finish.  So remember, that painting is more than just picking the color and the finish, it is knowing what to do before  you call a painting contractor.

Interior House Painting: Paint Your Bedrooms

Part two of our series on interior house painting focuses on your home's bedrooms.

What Color Should I Paint My Master Bedroom

What color should I paint my master bedroom? We get that question a lot. The paint color is just the beginning.
You also want to make sure you pick the right paint finish for your master bedroom as well. As we covered in one of our previous articles, the paint finish is as important if not more so than the color you choose. The higher the level of gloss, the easier it is to clean, however, it also increases the light reflection in a room. So a flat finish should be considered as the ideal finish for your master bedroom. After all, when you're trying to sleep, you don't need the reflections from your 48" plasma TV's LED lights to make an artificial starfield on the walls of your room. But if you're thinking of color, you want to consider one thing. You will be using your master bedroom for sleeping.
Do not use bright or garish colors in your bedroom unless you are putting it in as an accent wall or some other piece. The reason is the subconscious effect that color has. Painting your room a loud color can be potentially unsettling, and make for less than a restful sleep. And yes the same holds true for your kids.

Painting Your Kids' Rooms

Here's a little scenario for you to think about. Let's say you have two kids, a boy and a girl. Your sixteen year old son wants to paint his room. He has picked a bright scarlet red for two walls, and a bright saffron orange for two other walls. As for the ceiling. That's the best part: bright fluorescent lime-green. First off, calm down. Remember, paint isn't permanent. However, unless you want a teenager that's cranky every morning because he can't sleep, you may want to nudge him towards something a little more sedate. And before he asks, no you won't paint his room black and red either. Now your eleven year old daughter also wants to paint her room. She is picking a room color that will make her brother avoid her room even more than he already does: namely princess pink.
While it is a good thing to encourage your children to develop their individuality, work with them as far as color is concerned.
So remember, when you want to redo your home, one way that is time tested is a new paint job. And you want to make sure you call the right person to do it, namely a professional and experienced house painter in your area

What Color Should I Paint My Living Room?

What color should you paint your living room? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. You may decide to paint the room in a solid color.
According to the site This Old House though: "One way to go, however, is to use a complementary color scheme. Proving the rule that opposites attract, these pairings can always be found at opposite ends from each other on a paint color wheel. When put together, they bring out the best in each other, making both colors look cleaner and brighter than if either were mixed with, say, a neutral gray or a different shade of the same hue. An essential tool for paint pros everywhere, the color wheel is constructed to help you see the relationships between different hues. The bases are three primary colors: red, blue and yellow. These are then combined to make the three secondary colors: orange, green, and purple. Finally, the remaining six colors on the wheel are known as tertiary colors and are mixes of the secondary colors, including such hues as red-orange and blue-green. [READ MORE]
How can you tell if a color will look good in a room?  A paint strip is no sure indicator.  It can look good in the store, however, the minute you slap it on a wall you not only have buyer's remorse, you're also stuck with several cans of paint.  A good way to tell is to paint a small section of wall, and look at it both in low light, and with the drapes wide open.  That way you get a fair assessment.

Interior Painting: Some Final Thoughts

Whenever you're painting, you want to make sure that you not only get the color you're looking for,  you also want the paint finish you want as well.  Where finishes are concerned, the higher the gloss, the easier it is to clean, however, some finishes don't look good in some rooms of your home.  You always want to take into account what the room will look like when you're done.
Remember, you're an individual.  You know better than anyone what sort of colors you like.  If you're someone who likes gem tone colors such as ruby, magenta, topaz, and peridot, then earth tones such as sand, heather, and mahogany aren't going to cut it.  And when you're ready, call a house painter in your area.
